Avidyne Announces Certification of Software Upgrade for DFC90 Digital Autopilot in Cirrus
DFC90 Release 2 software adds Dynamic Flight Envelop Protection and Full Time Envelope Alerting (EA) Entegra-equipped Cirrus aircraft.
Lincoln, MA – Monday, January 9, 2012 – Avidyne Corporation, a leading provider of integrated avionics and safety systems for general aviation aircraft, announced today that they have received Technical Standard Order (TSO) and Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval of the DFC90 autopilot Release 2 software upgrade for Entegra-equipped Cirrus SR20 and SR22 aircraft. The certification also includes approval of the Release 8.0.5 software for the Entegra EXP5000 Primary Flight Display (PFD). This upgrade gives the DFC90 full-time Envelope Alerting (EA) and also allows the option of wiring the aircraft for dynamic Envelope Protection (EP) with Flap Sensing.
“The DFC90 originally certified in 2010 provides Envelope Protection when the autopilot is engaged, and has already proven itself to enhance safety and performance for more than 600 Cirrus customers,” said Patrick Herguth, Avidyne’s Chief Operating Officer. “Customers who upgrade their DFC90 to Release 2 will now have full-time Envelope Alerting, even when the autopilot is not on, which provides another significant boost in safety.”
“In addition, aircraft owners can elect to add the optional wiring for flap sensing, which enables Dynamic Envelope Protection by allowing the DFC90 to use knowledge of flap position to dynamically compute true stall speed and provide even better underspeed protection & alerting,” said Herguth.
The DFC90 autopilot adds the precision and reliability of an attitude-based flight control system, by taking advantage of the Air Data and Attitude Heading Reference System (ADAHRS) in the Entegra system. Both autopilots add Indicated Airspeed Hold (IAS Hold) capability, which is a preferred method for climbing and descending in these higher-performing aircraft. In addition, the DFC90 and DFC100 provide the safety enhancements of the ‘Straight & Level’ mode, providing one-button unusual attitude recovery, Flight Envelope Protection (EP) and full-time Envelope Alerting (EA). EP virtually eliminates autopilot-induced stalls (underspeed) and overspeeds, while EA protects against flight envelope exceedences by providing aural warnings to the pilot, even when the autopilot is not engaged.
The DFC100 is now approved for R9-equipped the Cirrus SR20/SR22 and Piper PA-46 Matrix.
The DFC90 is now approved for Entegra-equipped the Cirrus SR20/22 and Piper PA-46 Matrix and Mirage. Avidyne has previously announced plans to interface the DFC90 with the Aspen EFD1000 Pro Series flight displays, with initial certifications in Cessna 182 and Beech Baron/Bonanza aircraft expected in 2012.
Pricing & Availability
For existing owners of DFC90-equipped Cirrus aircraft, the price for the Release 2 upgrade is $500, which includes the factory update of the DFC90 flight computer and field-loadable software to update the Entegra EXP5000 PFD. This price includes the cost of shipping the software update kit. This price does not include the cost of shipping the DFC90 unit to/from Avidyne, nor does it include the cost for additional parts or dealer labor for performing the software upgrade or for any additional wiring should you choose to add it. All new DFC90 systems will include Release 2 software. The list price of the DFC90 for single-engine aircraft is $9,995, and $14,995 for turbine and multi-engine aircraft.
