Avidyne Corporation is leading the general aviation (GA) industry in the design and manufacture of innovative and easy-to-use avionics systems. Avidyne is uniquely focused developing avionics systems that make flying safer, more accessible, and more enjoyable for pilots and their passengers. Headquartered in Lincoln, MA, the company has facilities in Columbus, OH, and Melbourne, FL.

Skystream is a new company affiliated with Avidyne focused on delivering internet connectivity to smaller private aircraft and UAVs. Using a combination of satellite and air-to-ground technologies, Skystream will deliver medium and high bandwidth connectivity to aircraft worldwide. While there are several companies providing internet services to larger aircraft, our products feature small antennas, light weight and low cost transceivers, and affordable service plans which are tailored for the markets that Gogo, Inmarsat, Intelsat, ViaSat and others do not serve. Skystream is located in Melbourne, Florida and is looking for an experienced Wireless Systems Engineer. This position reports to the Systems Engineer Manger.

Summary:

This candidate will be a key player in the development of our Internet to the cockpit systems. This position demands a high energy, self motivated individual who is comfortable working independently and coordinating within Avidyne as well as with customers, partners and suppliers to achieve results.

Responsibilities:

  • Specifying the capability, appearance, behavior, performance and means of system integration of airborne sensor and communication systems while being a significant contributor to the development and verification teams of these systems.
  • Develop or refine standard practices and tools for systems engineering tasks to support avionics systems development.
  • Read and comprehend various technical standards, and convert those standards into requirements for a system implementing those standards.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings such as schematics, mechanical part drawings, and assembly drawings.
  • Author specifications, requirements, test cases, and test procedures.
  • Development of test tools and environments.
  • Specify the enhancement of existing airborne sensor functions and the creation of new airborne sensor functions and products such as surveillance, communications, and navigation.
  • The system produced will interface to other Avidyne equipment, aircraft systems, and sensors using advanced digital data bus communication protocols.
  • The development effort will include all phases of a formal software and hardware development lifecycle as required under RTCA DO-178B, DO-160G, and DO254 including requirements development; design documentation; and verification procedure development, execution, and reporting as well as other verification means such as lab-based integration, environmental testing, human factors testing and flight test.
  • This position will at times act in the capacity of Project Engineer for a given product or component:
    • Responsible for coordinating the engineering effort to achieve TSO.
    • Ensure issue resolution during lab and flight test.
    • Manage system configuration, assembly, updates and repairs.
    • Generate and track engineering change data (ECO/DCOs)
    • Coordinate or perform bench tests of the product.
    • Manage vendors with purchasing support to ensure successful build of engineering and test hardware assets.

Qualifications:

  • BS in an engineering discipline and 5-8 years of experience... or...
  • MS in an engineering discipline and 3+ years of experience.
  • Previous Systems Engineering experience

Highly desired:

  • Wireless networking, satellite communications, cellular communications or telecommunications experience.
  • Networking technologies such as TCP/IP, WiFi, Ethernet, DHCP, NAT, and/or DNS/DDNS.
  • Networking security technologies such as WEP, WPA, WPS, SSH and/or firewalls.
  • Communications technologies such as SSH, Telnet, VoIP, SIP, SMS, and/or SMTP.
  • Linux and/or Android operating systems.
  • iOS operating system.
  • Avionics or aviation background and a passion for improving flight safety
  • Formal background in Systems Engineering
  • Knowledge of system and software development within a structured development environment (examples include DO-178B, DO-254, MIL STD 2167A, DOD498)
  • At least working knowledge of C and C++ software development
  • A successful track record in the development of avionics or glass flight decks
  • Pilot's license
  • General aviation industry experience
  • Experience with DOORS Requirements Management software and Perforce configuration management software
  • Familiarity with FAA TSO, STC, TC processes
  • Familiarity with DO-160 environmental qualification testing to include HIRF/lightning
  • Working knowledge of DO-178 and DO-254 software and complex electronic hardware assurance processes.
